Jurors select Pat Cross art into Metamorphosis exhibit.
The David L. Dickirson Fine Art Gallery announces its current show, Metamorphosis. A springtime exhibition, “Metamorphosis displays artworks that encompass rebirth, renewal, transformation and redefinition,” writes the Gallery Director in the prospectus.
Jurors of the show selected three artworks by Pat Cross, original oils of her garden bloom series: Peony White Delight, Yellow Stella Lily and Sunny Petunia, all inspired by her tours in her mother’s backyard garden. “Although my mother passed on, her memory continues with these florals that I paint,” says Pat, explaining, “Mother invited me to sip morning coffee and browse the blooms while she described the unique behaviors of each plant.” Pat Cross, adds, “A Master Gardener, Mom knew her botany!” During these garden tours, Pat Cross noticed a rising desire to depict florals in oil paint.
In her floral series, Pat Cross fills the canvas or panel with the face of a single bloom not unlike a portrait. “I want to convey the unique personalities of each bloom,” says Pat Cross, “so I paint each with the same attention to detail and temperament that I do a person.” For example, in Peony White Delight, Pat shows the bloom tilting slightly downward as the large, luxurious, and translucent petals subtly shroud the delightfully modest face of the flower.
