Long known for its brilliant beauty, the Rhododendron graces the landscape of many Appalachian homes, parks and forests. “I find the deep crimson hue of the bud equally as striking as the fully open bloom,” says Pat Cross, adding, “So, I decided to include both in my new oil painting Budding Rhododendron.” The oil painting caught the eyes of the jurors for the Best of West Virginia annual exhibition at Tamarack Marketplace this summer.

“Whenever one of my paintings receives a strong response from my viewers, I then move forward in my plan to produce prints of the image,” says Pat Cross. With a greater emphasis on items made in the United States and locally, regional artists notice an uptick in sales. “I print, assemble and package my prints from my studio in this small West Virginia town,” says Pat Cross, adding, “Thanks to modern technology, I may live where I choose and work as an artist.”
