This loon paused at a bird sanctuary in Eleanor, WV to rest during her long migration from Canada. She preens her wings in preparation for the next long stretch on her way to the southern coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The haunting cry of the loon remains one of the most distinctive, making their migration visits more memorable than with other, more melodic birds.
Some subjects portray best in black and white for the most visual impact, such as the loon with its idiosyncratic plumage, a mix of checker board and speared stripes. The markings help the loons easily spot each other not only for mating, but also during pit-stops during the migration journey.
